Vanishing Point
Philadelphia, PA
First of all, I love how the brickwork looks like rows of dotted lines in this picture.
So today was my last day in Philly for the summer, and I decided to spend it wandering South Street, one of my favourite areas in the city. Its really close to the historic part of town, so its really pretty, full of old buildings, beautiful old houses (with marble steps), gardens and parks. There are also a ton of boutiques, independent bookstores/record stores, galleries, and tasty food places. Spent a few hours at Chapterhouse, this really great coffee place on 9th street. Finished Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut.
And here's the important part of the day.
I fed myself with:
- a panini caprese I stuck in the oven (given to me by this barista at closing time last night! what a good deal)
- fro yo (tart pineapple with lots of strawberries and mangoes)
- an ice latte (no sugar, either)
All in all, a pretty good day by myself. A great way to end my summer here. ;)

*apologies for the extra picture, I just had to compare them!*
Mum made zhong zhi last night, even though the Rice Dumpling festival was long over in May. It'd be the last time you kids'll be eating them together for a long time since your brother's leaving for Vancouver in a few days, your sis's getting married and you'll be heading back to the US, she said, without turning to face me. She continued stuffing rice, stewed pork and duck egg yolks into the bamboo leaf pyramid, tied it with leftover bamboo fiber and patted it firmly. Then she looked around and wiped her hands on her shorts. What time'll you be coming back tonight, she asked, all ready with the keys to leave. I don't know, I said, but I'll be back for dinner. Let's have dumplings for dinner, I added, closing the door.

On another note, I wonder if the architect of the KLIA, Kisho Kurokawa, derived any inspiration from rice dumplings while thinking of a design. A voice inside my head goes, but then again he's Japanese. Oh, who knows :)

I associate Geometry with lines, angles and more lines. I was having a Latte (no sugar, please) in Seven Seeds today and had my dSLR in my bag. I looked up and saw the geometrical formations that unfolded as time went by and the sun changed its position.
So I took a picture.=)

This confocal image was taken after completing a TUNEL assay, which allows for the detection of DNA fragmentation in apoptotic cells, as the terminal ends of nucleic acids are labeled. If you look closely, you can see the DNA fragments. This was taken at 100x magnification, with 3x zoom :)

Jian: That's really funny that you go to a place called Seven Seeds. One of my favourite coffee shops here is called Seven Stones! Love the shadow. I've been drinking a lot of lattes this summer - found so many good places in the city. :)
NO SUGAR?
what a purist you are, Jian. I AM ONE TOO! I love how you're building up this collection of café pictures. Ah, café culture :)
gorgeous picture jing, and yummy zongzi darell!!
i love how you all have architecture in here.
well June, we are all architects/engineers you know. :) thanks! I can't quite make out what your picture is of...:(
Darell, please send me a zongzi? Haha your pictures made me laugh out loud. Just thinking of the architect eating zongzi one day and being like HEY I have an idea. Apparently at some point Frank Gehry brought in a plasticine model his nephew or son or whatever had made and used it as the form for his newest building. Seriously! What kind of architecture is that! Do you like his stuff?
Jing: I really really really like your picture. It is just so...argh I can't find the word to describe it. I love the progression of the windows from big to small! Seven Seeds is quite hardcore. It's to coffee what a vineyard is for wine.
Darell: Llike the comparison=) I like Zong Zi too! What stuffings were inside?
June: I still want to see more of New York! Is that a prism of sorts by the way?
Darell: And OH yes....coffee purist. I get very offended/insulted/angry when the barista adds sugar. It's like putting Tomato sauce on a succulent piece of Wagyu.
Bwahaha. The Zhong Zhis all mysteriously disappeared today. :(
Jing, what a powerful pic. I like pictures that make viewers return to it over and over again instead of just giving everything it has to offer in one go. POWAH. I like Gehry for his bravado and sense of adventure. But apprently gutsiness sometimes disregards practicalities. The STATA center of MIT (hello Tian we miss youuuu) has reported leaks and cracks, so I've heard? Speaking of building blocks, didn't F.L.Wright play with them all the time when he was younger? What a badass he turned out to be!
Jian, I know. It's like putting ketchup on a bona fide burger!
(welcome back tian!!)
um...i think my picture was of a light reflection off of my one of my lenses...
Tian that is super cool.
darell, you changed your picture! into a picture of a drawing of that airport! -envying drawing skills-
