Tuesday, August 11, 2009 (Where we live)

"Welcome to the Rainbow Community Park"
New Haven, CT

Aperture: f/5.0
Exposure time: 1/160
ISO Speed: 200

12 noon but no one goes in- or out. Grudging, pretty. I would if I could.
Then there are those kids that zoom by on Mongooses, a wheel up in the air.

Philadelphia: City of Murals
13th and Locust

Aperture: f/18
Exposure time: 1/125
ISO Speed: 1600

Philadelphia has
Over three thousand murals
Covering its walls.

1984-
To fight rampant grafitti
We sanctioned this art.

Twenty thousand youths
Since that year have touched the walls
Of our neighbourhoods.

jonagold and nuts on an mta subway map.
june's bedroom, new york.
although new york city is nicknamed "the big apple,"
we have quite a few nuts here too.
in this case, pistachios and almonds.
i guess "the big nuts" just doesn't sound as good.
(look closely and you'll find out which borough i live in.)

"Rush Hour Frenzy"
Outram Park Interchange, Singapore

Aperture: f/2.8
Exposure time: 1/6

Singaporeans, non-Singaporeans, and tourists alike rely heavily on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system to get around this city-state. During rush hour, this station is especially hectic, since this is where people can transfer between the East-West Green Line and the North-East Purple Line. It's quite amazing to see how quickly the stations and trains fill up with people, and how in just 5 minutes, they're gone--off to different destinations--yet, they are rapidly replaced by an endless flow of people.

I sharpened the contrast by a bit, since the original photo was slightly blurry due to movement--both mine and others'...but I feel that the blurriness adds to a sense of motion.

"Another day, in another laneway, in Melbourne"
Melbourne, VIC

Aperture: f/13
Exposure time: 1/4

Melbourne has numerous laneways, filled with the best cafes where one can sit and relax, people watch and most importantly, have a nice cup of coffee. There is so much life in these laneways It is Melbourne's heart and soul, and without it, Melbourne ceases to be special. This particular laneway is called Centre Place in the CBD. I love the dim lighting, which stays constant throughout the day and the people watching.

jing: that's a beautiful wall. i love that grumpy cello man.
tian: the blurriness captures the "frenzy" perfectly--where were you standing to get that special angle?
jian: what does hells sell?

I was standing on the escalator (which contributed to the blurriness), going down to the platform area, and had tilted my camera slightly when taking the picture. haha, I was one of those who were rushing off somewhere too.

June, I really like the lighting and the composition of this picture... its like a still life painting.

Tian, I really like the picture in the sense that I think you really captured the "rush hour" feeling - the blurriness definitely helps with that. However, I can't help but wish I had something to focus on. When I look at the picture there isn't one element that I'm drawn to look at. That might just be my preference though. :)

Jian, I could say the same thing about your picture. The first thing that catches my eye are the group of lit signs, but I guess to me they don't really seem like one united element. I really do like the way you managed to capture the contrast between the lit signs and the darker alley though... not that I've ever been to Melbourne, but I think you probably captured something of the spirit of the place. :) Can't wait to come visit!

Argh I have no idea why my comments won't post. Anyway...

June: That is an awesome take on the Big Apple and other things big..........! I couldn't contain my laughter.

Jing: My literary skills don't extend to Haikus and I thought you mucked up the word formatting;)My friend Hayden noted the murals. He went to Philly over the holidays!

Tian: Blurry = Frenzy. I think the next step would be to capture a stationary passenger amongst the MRT mix! Lovely picture though!

Hi hi hi! I'm still alive, I assure you all! *avoids being pelted by apples and uh...nuts* Am simply bowled over how much I'm seeing and learning from all these different city pictures- definitely my favorite subject.

Jingy, you haiku bum. I love how you have those dinky little cars right next to the giant figures the mural there!

June, Queens and lascivious fruity symbols? You are naughty! Shouldn't it be the Bronx? Jk, jk. Did you intentionally capture those shadows as dark as they look in the picture?

Tian, I think motion pictures are so hard to capture well. That's a great one you have there! But I agree with the others about having a point of focus somewhere...

Jian, love that vantage point you have there. I feel like I'm floating above all those heads in the pictures, staring at all that neon. Slinky, dark, cool cat- I'm definitely feeling the atmosphere of this narrow but complex alleyway here. Sweeet.

DARELL, YOU'RE BACK!!
:D
for my picture, i deliberately positioned the shadows that way--i tried to feature the words "NEW YORK" and "QUEENS" and the nuts in the light bubbles, but "NEW YORK" was far too blurred for y'all to make any sense out of it.
