Flesche!
Temple University, Philadelphia, PA

Holy shit. What an amazing weekend. Without a doubt, the best weekend I've ever had here. It started on Thursday evening, when my seminar ended and I slept through Friday classes because I was exhausted. Friday was then filled with lots of hanging out, cooking, costume-trying and adventuring.

Saturday. Temple Open. My last Temple Open, since I'm going abroad next fall. I fenced better than I ever have in my LIFE. Fought hard. Kicked some butt. Things fell into place. Did not mindfuck myself. I have NEVER ever in my life had to fence 3 15-touch bouts in the same day before, because I have never survived more than one direct elimination bout before. Somehow I made it through 2 of them before losing to this girl from Cornell who eventually placed 4th.

So. My second 15-touch bout.

I was seeded 25th, and was up against the 8th seed. She had gotten 3rd place last year, and she's a varsity fencer for UPenn. She'd beaten my teammate last year. But yeah, I caused an upset! She was so angry that she was taunting me on the strip, and refused to look at me when she saluted me. It was 14-10 to me and she was like, "c'mon, lunge. lunge at me, why don't you." So then, my team behind me was yelling at me to go for a double touch, then I actually did lunge and it was a single light and 15-10 and I'd won and my team was going crazy behind me. It was crazy. She was so pissed. She's so much more experienced than I am. I don't know how it happened.

But I got top 16. :) Somehow. It was an amazing amazing feeling. Temple is such a tough tournament, and a lot of the really good fencers there have been fencing for forever, since they were kids or whatever. And they're all USFA ranked and fence for varsity schools and I'm neither and ahhhh I feel so good about myself.

I just love our team! Emily and I then went out and partied it up like madness. We partied sooo hard. It was crazy. My last Halloween party, which is good because no other one could top this! You know how it is, when you're going crazy and energy is soaring and every song that comes on is like your favourite song? Yeah, that was us. We fluctuated between yelling "WE ARE SO BAD WE HAVE TO WAKE UP IN 3 HOURS WHY ARE WE DOING THIS" and "WE ARE SO BADASS." And the guys we were with were going crazy too, totally breaking it down on the stage with us... man, I love these sophomores! We also woke up like 3 hours later to support the men's team. People were sick. :(

But yeah, short story is: I feel like such a badass.

And now, back to work. :P SO MUCH WORK OMG.

P.S. I do hope everyone with swine flu gets better soon though. :(
P.P.S. A "flesche" is when you kind of run at someone to get a touch. Its pronounced "flesh." Guys do it a lot. I try to do it sometimes. You're supposed to have your back foot crossing over your front foot. The guy in the picture is mid-flesche.
P.P.P.S. I'll slowly be catching up with the past 2 weeks of pictures.
